How to Prepare a Household Maintenance List

Turn small household jobs into a clear list, with priorities, access details and questions about materials and scope.

Describe the problem, not just the solution

Write down what is happening, where it is happening and when you noticed it. A description such as a fitting becoming loose is more useful than asking for a particular repair without knowing the cause. You do not need to diagnose the problem yourself. Do not handle exposed wiring, suspect materials or anything unsafe to gather more information.

Group jobs and set priorities

Separate urgent concerns from routine jobs and cosmetic preferences. Explain which rooms or items matter most to you. A short, ordered list helps the provider assess the work and agree on what can be done. If there is an immediate safety hazard, keep away from it and contact the appropriate qualified professional rather than waiting for a routine visit.

Check access and permissions

Mention stairs, parking, locked areas and any access preferences. If you rent or share the property, confirm any required permission from the owner or responsible person before work starts. Do not assume a maintenance enquiry includes structural work, home modifications or work that requires a licensed trade.

Discuss materials before buying

Tell the provider about any parts or fittings you already have, but ask whether they are suitable before purchasing more. Agree on who supplies materials, what they cost and whether disposal is included. Keep the original task list available so both sides can check it against the proposed quote.

Confirm scope and payment

Ask which jobs can be accepted, which require a specialist and what remains excluded. Confirm price, availability and payment arrangements before booking. If you intend to use NDIS funding, clarify the eligibility of the specific support first: routine repairs or materials are not automatically funded simply because you have an NDIS plan.
